Technical FAQ

Technical questions about Splat Labs features, compatibility, hardware processing, and integrations.

Upload and Processing

What file formats can I upload?

FormatExtensionNotes
PLY.plyStandard Gaussian Splat format
SPLAT.splatNative Gaussian Splat format
KSPLAT.ksplatCompressed format, faster loading
XGRIDS.xgridsXGRIDS native format with metadata

What's the maximum file size?

PlanMax Size
Free500 MB
Starter2 GB
Business5 GB
Enterprise10 GB+ (custom)

How long does processing take?

File SizeTypical Time
Under 100 MB1–2 minutes
100–500 MB2–5 minutes
500 MB – 1 GB5–10 minutes
Over 1 GB10–30 minutes

I have an XGRIDS file β€” how do I upload it?

XGRIDS format files must be processed in LCC Studio first before uploading to Splat Labs. You cannot upload raw PortalCam or Lixel L2 Pro capture data directly to Splat Labs β€” the data must be converted to a Gaussian Splat in LCC Studio first, then exported as an XGRIDS package for upload.

Can Splat Labs generate a Gaussian Splat from my raw photos or LiDAR data?

No. Splat Labs is a hosting and visualization platform β€” it does not process raw data into Gaussian Splats. You must use external software (LCC Studio, Postshot, Luma AI, Polycam, etc.) to generate the Gaussian Splat first, then upload the resulting file to Splat Labs.

Cloud processing (uploading raw data and having Splat Labs process it) is planned for a future release.

What are the computer requirements for processing PortalCam data?

Processing PortalCam data into a Gaussian Splat requires a powerful desktop computer with a high-end NVIDIA GPU (e.g., NVIDIA 4090 or 5090) and at least 64–128 GB RAM. Processing a 30-minute scan can take 10–12 hours.

Only NVIDIA GPUs are supported for reconstruction. LCC Studio's reconstruction engine is built on NVIDIA CUDA and requires an NVIDIA graphics card. AMD, Intel Arc, and other non-NVIDIA GPUs cannot perform reconstruction. Non-NVIDIA GPUs can still be used to view 3DGS models in LCC Studio.

See Processing Requirements for full details.

Does the PortalCam generate LAS/LAZ point cloud files?

No. The PortalCam produces Gaussian Splats only. For .LAS or .LAZ point cloud output, use the Lixel L2 Pro.

Can Splat Labs smooth noisy meshes or generate Gaussian Splats from meshes?

No. Splat Labs accepts pre-processed Gaussian Splat files only. If your scan has quality issues, refine it in your processing software (LCC Studio, Postshot, etc.) before uploading.

Platform Features

Why doesn't the AI floor plan work well?

AI floor plans work best when:

  • The room has complete coverage with clear floor and wall boundaries
  • The scan was captured from a top-down view (or you navigate to a top-down view before generating)
  • Lighting was adequate during capture
  • You use the clipping tool to isolate the target area before generating

Do AI floor plans export as CAD files (.DWG, .DXF)?

No. AI floor plans export as PNG only. There is no CAD export. The AI floor plan is a visual representation, not a CAD drawing. If you need CAD-compatible deliverables, you need point cloud data from the Lixel L2 Pro processed through ROCK Cloud.

Do AI floor plan PNGs include scale metadata?

No. The PNG files do not embed scale or orientation information automatically. You must use the 3-point calibration tool in Splat Labs to add scale and align the floor plan to the 3D scan. See AI Floor Plans for the calibration workflow.

Virtual staging looks incorrect

Tips:

  • Make sure your viewpoint is relatively level (not heavily angled down or up)
  • Ensure the room has adequate lighting in the original scan
  • Be specific in your prompt β€” describe room type, furniture style, materials, and lighting
  • Try generating multiple variations for better results

What happens to my AI-enabled projects if I cancel my subscription?

AI enablement is permanent per project. If your subscription lapses or downgrades, AI-enabled projects remain AI-enabled as long as those projects remain active.

Viewing and Sharing

Why can't viewers see my project?

Check:

  1. Sharing is enabled β€” Open the project, click Share, and ensure "Link sharing enabled" is checked
  2. Link is correct β€” Copy directly from the Share button rather than your browser's address bar
  3. Browser compatibility β€” Advise viewers to use a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

Projects load slowly for viewers

Tips:

  1. Use compressed formats (KSPLAT files load faster than PLY)
  2. Ensure viewers have a stable internet connection (20+ Mbps recommended)
  3. Very large projects may take longer on mobile devices
  4. Splat Labs uses progressive streaming β€” the scene refines in quality as it loads; this is normal behavior

Does it work offline?

No. Splat Labs is a cloud platform that requires an internet connection for viewing and all platform features.

Compatibility

What browsers are supported?

BrowserSupport
Chromeβœ“ Full support
Firefoxβœ“ Full support
Safariβœ“ Full support
Edgeβœ“ Full support
Internet Explorerβœ— Not supported

What are the system requirements for viewers?

Minimum:

  • Modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge β€” last 2 versions)
  • WebGL support
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 20 Mbps internet connection

Recommended:

  • Dedicated GPU (significantly improves rendering performance)
  • 8 GB+ RAM
  • 50+ Mbps internet

Which VR headsets work?

  • Meta Quest 2/3/Pro
  • Apple Vision Pro
  • HTC Vive
  • Valve Index
  • Any WebXR-compatible headset

Troubleshooting

Project won't load

  1. Clear browser cache β€” Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Delete
  2. Try incognito mode β€” Rules out browser extension conflicts
  3. Try a different browser β€” Isolates browser-specific issues
  4. Check WebGL β€” Visit get.webgl.org to verify WebGL support

"WebGL not supported" error

  1. Update your graphics drivers
  2. Try a different browser
  3. Enable hardware acceleration in browser settings
  4. Try on a different device

Embed isn't working

  1. Confirm the iframe code is correctly pasted (not modified)
  2. Confirm the project has link sharing enabled in the Share dialog
  3. Confirm your plan includes embedding (Starter and above)
  4. Confirm the hosting site doesn't block iframes (check for X-Frame-Options errors in the browser console)

Measurements won't save

  1. Ensure you're logged in
  2. Verify you have edit permissions on the project
  3. Confirm the project isn't archived
  4. Try refreshing the page

API and Integrations

Is there an API?

Yes. Splat Labs has a programmatic upload API available today. A full public API with project management, status polling, and webhook support is under development. See API for current capabilities.

Can I integrate with ArcGIS, Autodesk, or Revit?

Yes. See the Integrations section for detailed guides:

  • ArcGIS β€” Dashboards, Experience Builder, StoryMaps
  • Autodesk (ACC & Revit) β€” Issues, documents, BIM workflows
  • SketchUp β€” V-Ray 7, Scan Essentials, Trimble Labs Beta
