Processing Requirements
Computer requirements and processing times for converting PortalCam data into Gaussian Splats
Processing Requirements
Processing PortalCam data involves two distinct steps. It's important to understand what happens on the device, what requires your desktop computer, and what Splat Labs Cloud handles.
The Two-Step Workflow
Step 1: Capture (On the PortalCam)
The PortalCam uses its onboard Multi-SLAM chip to capture raw camera and LiDAR data and fuse them in real-time during your scan. No desktop computer is needed for capture.
Step 2: Gaussian Splat Generation (On Your Desktop)
Converting the raw PortalCam data into a Gaussian Splat (.SPLAT or .LCC file) must be done on a powerful desktop computer using processing software like LCC Studio or Postshot.
Splat Labs Cloud does not handle this initial processing step. Once the Gaussian Splat is generated on your desktop, you upload it to Splat Labs for hosting, sharing, and AI features.
Desktop Requirements
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | High-end NVIDIA GPU | NVIDIA 4090 or 5090 |
| RAM | 64 GB | 128 GB |
| Storage | Fast SSD with sufficient space for scan data | NVMe SSD |
| OS | Windows 10/11 | Windows 11 |
Processing a large scan (30+ minutes) can require approximately 128 GB of RAM and a high-end GPU such as an NVIDIA 5090. Processing time can range from 10–12 hours for large scans.
Processing Times
| Scan Size | Approximate Processing Time |
|---|---|
| Small space (1–3 rooms) | 30 min – 2 hours |
| Medium space (1 floor) | 2–5 hours |
| Large space (multi-floor / 30+ min scan) | 10–12 hours |
Processing times vary based on your GPU and RAM. A more powerful system significantly reduces processing time.
Processing Software Options
| Software | Included With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LCC Studio Basic | PortalCam Standard Package | Standard processing |
| LCC Studio Premium | PortalCam Premium Package | Adds HD Enhancement, Map Fusion, and more |
| Postshot | Third-party (download separately) | Alternative Gaussian Splat trainer |
After Processing: Splat Labs Cloud
Once your Gaussian Splat is generated on your desktop:
- Upload to Splat Labs — Log in at cloud.rockrobotic.com and upload the file (PLY, SPLAT, KSPLAT, or XGRIDS format)
- Viewing — No powerful PC needed to view the model. Any modern device and browser can stream it.
- AI features — Apply AI Floor Plans, Virtual Staging, and Scene Redesign from any device.
Cloud Processing — Coming Soon
Splat Labs recognizes the significant hardware bottleneck associated with local processing. A cloud processing solution is under development that will let you upload raw PortalCam data and have it processed on Splat Labs cloud hardware for a fee. This will eliminate the desktop processing requirement entirely.
