Portals

Connect multiple 3D scenes into seamless navigation experiences

Portals

Portals let you connect multiple 3D scans into a seamless navigation experience β€” like walking between rooms or buildings in a video game. Click a portal and you're instantly transported to another scene.

What Are Portals?

Portals are clickable waypoints that transport viewers between different 3D scenes. Use them to:

  • Connect interior rooms to exterior drone captures
  • Link multiple floors of a building
  • Create guided walkthroughs across large properties
  • Connect different buildings on a campus

Creating Portals

Step 1: Prepare Your Scans

Upload the scenes you want to connect as separate Splat Labs projects.

Step 2: Create a Portal

  1. Open your first project
  2. Navigate to where you want the portal in the viewer
  3. Right click in the viewer, then select "Add Portal" in the pop-up
  4. Select the destination project
  5. Choose the landing position in the destination scene

Step 3: Configure the Portal

  • Label β€” Name the portal (e.g., "To Backyard", "Floor 2", "Exterior View")
  • Icon β€” Choose a visual indicator style
  • Preview β€” Optionally add a thumbnail of the destination

When viewers click a portal:

  1. A smooth transition animation plays
  2. The viewer arrives at the destination scene
  3. They can navigate back via a return portal

Portals work bidirectionally β€” create a return portal in the destination for seamless back-and-forth navigation.

Use Cases

Real Estate

Connect different areas of a property:

  • Front yard β†’ Interior β†’ Backyard
  • Main floor β†’ Second floor β†’ Basement
  • Individual unit β†’ Building exterior β†’ Neighborhood overview

Construction

Link project phases or zones:

  • Exterior site β†’ Building interior
  • Multiple buildings on a campus
  • Different zones of a large facility

Large Properties

Break massive sites into manageable scans connected by portals:

  • Multiple buildings across a campus
  • Different factory production zones
  • Indoor and outdoor areas of a venue

Best Practices

  1. Plan portal locations β€” Choose natural transition points: doorways, thresholds, stairwells
  2. Use clear labels β€” Descriptive names help viewers understand where they're going
  3. Test the complete flow β€” Walk through the full experience before sharing
  4. Create return portals β€” Always give viewers a way back
